He lay in the dark and died slowly. When the god finally came, he gave into it with the same silence he’d met most things in his miserable life with one caveat. Evening came on and the woods lining the beautiful road became dark and deep. She pushed her tired body on. She had miles to go. She had promises to keep.

It was full dark by the time she got to her mother’s house on a silent street where somehow the lights still worked. She pushed the bike preferring to keep the sounds to a minimum and keep Bimpy company on the lonely roads leading home. She wanted a bath and a nice long rest. She felt the weariness like a thin patina of moist air on her skin. If she didn’t rest, she’d simply make one mistake too many. Even Bimpy moved slowly, tongue hanging out of her mouth and occasionally glancing up at the woman as if to say, “We there yet?” which made her smile despite her fatigue. When she came to the door, she all but collapsed against it, her body thudding sharply. The door lock clicked and she stumbled inside. She felt hands and heard Mrs. Sinclair’s annoyed voice and had time to wonder if the lady ever had a good day in her life and then reproached herself. She was an old woman who had lived just long enough to see the world end. Then there was nothing.
